What is Multi-Agent Orchestration? Coordinating AI Agent Teams

Multi-agent orchestration coordinates specialized AI agents on one task: who does what, how they share context, and where people approve. Learn the patterns, the use cases, and how to govern it.

What is Multi-Agent Orchestration?

Multi-agent orchestration is the coordination of several specialized AI agents working on one piece of work. Instead of asking a single agent to do everything, an orchestration layer decides which agent takes each subtask, how results and context pass between them, what tools each may use, and where a person must approve. It matters most when work crosses systems, teams or skills that one agent can't reliably hold at once.

  • Splits a complex job across agents with narrow, testable roles
  • Controls how agents hand off work and share context
  • Limits each agent to the tools and data its role needs
  • Puts approvals and audit trails around the whole run
  • Common patterns include supervisor, swarm and nested hierarchies

How Multi-Agent Orchestration Works

An orchestrator takes a goal, breaks it into subtasks, and routes each one to the agent best suited to it. Agents act through their allowed tools and return results, and the orchestrator decides what happens next. The main design choice is the pattern: a supervisor directs specialists from the centre, a swarm lets agents hand work to each other, and a hierarchy nests supervisors for larger jobs.

1

Break down the goal

The orchestrator turns a request such as "prepare the renewal review" into subtasks: pull usage data, read open tickets, check contract terms, draft the summary.

2

Route to specialists

Each subtask goes to an agent with a defined role and only the tools that role needs, so one agent's mistake or permissions can't spread across the run.

3

Share context and hand off

Agents pass results through shared state or messages. Good orchestration passes what the next agent needs, not the whole history, which keeps cost and confusion down.

4

Check, approve and record

The orchestrator checks results, retries or reroutes when something fails, pauses for human approval on consequential actions, and records every step for audit.

Common Multi-Agent Orchestration Use Cases

Customer support resolution

A triage agent classifies the ticket, a research agent searches the knowledge base and customer history, and a resolution agent drafts the answer or action for approval.

Document processing with review

One agent extracts fields from an invoice or contract, another checks them against system records, and a third routes exceptions to the right person.

Cross-system operations

Specialist agents for the CRM, ERP and ticketing system work on one process, each with its own permissions, under a supervisor that owns the outcome.

Multi-Agent Orchestration in FlowGenX AI

FlowGenX AI is built for this. Agent Fabric lets you run agents that collaborate and delegate subtasks using supervisor, swarm and nested hierarchy patterns, model-agnostic and sharing the same Enterprise MCP tools. You build them on the visual canvas or by describing the process to Companion. Policies, approvals and traces come from one control plane, with execution in your cloud or ours.
